Montgomery County Arrest History
The Montgomery County Sheriff makes arrests in unincorporated areas, assists local departments, serves warrants, and administers the county jail. Litchfield, Hillsboro, and Nokomis police keep the reports their officers create. Illinois State Police may hold a separate state-police incident record. County dispatch material can also be distinct from the city report, as Litchfield uses Sheriff dispatch.
An arrest history may connect an agency report, booking cycle, fingerprints, filed court case, and later disposition. Each stage has its own custodian. A booking documents intake and allegations. It does not establish that the State's Attorney filed the same charge or that a conviction followed.
Call for a New Montgomery Booking
No official source inspected exposes a public Montgomery County jail roster or searchable recent-arrest log. For current custody, call the jail at 217-532-9514. Give the full name and an approximate arrest date. Ask whether the person was booked, remains in custody, was released, or transferred. A citation or police contact may produce no county booking.

Looking Up Montgomery County Arrests
Use a channel-complete search because each source answers a different question. The jail confirms present or recent county custody. The arresting agency holds its report. Judici and the Circuit Clerk show whether prosecutors filed a case. ISP offers state criminal-history products, while IDOC covers state custody after commitment.
- Call 217-532-9514 for a current Montgomery County booking because no verified public roster was found.
- Identify the arresting agency and request its arrest or incident report through its official records channel.
- Search Montgomery County Judici, then ask the Circuit Clerk for the filed docket or disposition.
- Use ISP CHIRP for a public Illinois conviction inquiry or fingerprint-based Access and Review for your own state transcript.
- Check IDOC for state custody and use a focused FOIA request when the online and phone routes do not supply the source document.
VINELink can provide eligible custody notifications but should not be treated as an arrest-history archive. The VINELink custody-notification source is shown below.

Use an alert for custody change, then verify the underlying booking or release with the holding agency.
Which Montgomery Agency Made the Arrest
The event location, officer name, citation, or dispatch record can identify the creating agency. Ask Litchfield Police for Litchfield reports, Hillsboro Police for Hillsboro reports, and Nokomis Police for Nokomis reports. The Sheriff is the source for sheriff-created incidents, county dispatch, and county jail material. A city arrest does not transfer ownership of the police narrative to the Sheriff merely because the person entered the county jail.
| Agency | Report route | Direct contact |
|---|---|---|
| Montgomery County Sheriff | Sheriff FOIA email or office | 217-532-9511 |
| Litchfield Police | Online FOIA form | 217-324-5991 |
| Hillsboro Police | Police FOIA Officer, mail or counter | 217-532-5566 |
| Nokomis Police | Written hand, mail, email, fax, or letter request | 217-563-2141 |
Specify the date, location, incident number, and desired components. Ask separately for dispatch audio, video, photos, or booking material when those records have different custodians.
Inside a Montgomery County Arrest Record
A sheriff booking entry and the ISP arrest cycle can carry names used at arrest, arrest date, agency, case number, fingerprint-linked document control number, charges, and custody events. Local release depends on what the agency lawfully discloses. The Circuit Court case number becomes the best cross-reference after filing.
| Booking or DCN | Links the intake or state arrest cycle to one event. |
|---|---|
| Booking date and time | Shows when county custody began, not when a case was resolved. |
| Arresting agency | Identifies the likely custodian of the arrest report. |
| Charges | Lists intake allegations that prosecutors may later change. |
| Release conditions | Records available custody or court-release information. |
| Photograph | May be withheld or limited by privacy, investigative, juvenile, and statutory rules. |
| Release or transfer | Shows a custody event, not the final court outcome. |
Sheriff FOIA for Montgomery Arrest Reports
For a sheriff-created arrest or incident, send a focused request to Sheriff_FOIA@montgomerycountyil.gov. Illinois FOIA normally gives a public body five business days for a noncommercial response, with a possible five-business-day statutory extension and written notice. Ask for electronic delivery and for segregable nonexempt portions if some details require redaction.
Useful locator details include the incident date and time, place, Sheriff's case number, involved unit, and exact record components. A request for “everything” can delay identification and raises more exemption issues than a request for the arrest report, booking sheet, dispatch log, or a named recording.

Booking Logs and Recent Arrests
Montgomery County publishes monthly jail operations reports, not a verified public name-by-name arrest roster. The reports count detainees processed, average daily detainees, average stay, transports, transport hours, and jail incidents. March 2025 reported 118 detainees processed and an average daily population of 34.19. April reported 93 and 35.40; May reported 108 and 33.61.
Those numbers are flows and daily averages. They are not mugshot lists, rated capacity, unique defendant counts, or crime rates. A person's absence from a phone check, monthly report, or later court search does not prove no arrest occurred. Very recent cases may not yet be filed, and some police encounters lead to citation or release without county booking.
Read the monthly figures with their reporting period. One person can create more than one custody event, and transfers consume staff time without representing a new local arrest. The average daily count describes how many people were held across the month, while detainees processed describes movement through intake. Neither measure supports a claim about one person's record. For an individual event, use the booking identifiers, the originating agency report, and the court case if prosecutors filed one.
Illinois FOIA requires specified chronologically maintained arrest information to be furnished as soon as practical and generally no later than 72 hours after arrest, subject to statutory limits. Juvenile confidentiality and law-enforcement exemptions still control.
Fingerprints Link Montgomery Arrest Cycles
Fingerprints and the State Identification Number connect a Montgomery County arrest cycle to the Illinois State Police Bureau of Identification. The agency reports the arrest, prosecutors and courts report later steps, and custodial agencies add custody events. Missing or mismatched identifiers can cause a disposition gap.
A public UCIA response is narrower than the subject's record. It disseminates qualifying Illinois conviction information and does not turn non-conviction arrests into a public product. ISP Access and Review is the route for someone to see and challenge their own complete authorized transcript.

When Montgomery Custody Becomes IDOC Custody
The county jail handles pretrial custody and shorter local commitments. After a prison sentence and transfer, the Illinois Department of Corrections becomes the state-custody source. Its locator may show identity, institution, sentence, and release-status fields. A release status can reflect mandatory supervised release and does not replace the sentencing order.
The official IDOC custody search is shown below.

Search IDOC only after distinguishing a county booking from a commitment to state prison.
Arrests Are Not Convictions
An arrest says an agency took enforcement action based on an allegation. A conviction requires a plea or finding of guilt in court. The Montgomery County Circuit Clerk docket can show dismissal, acquittal, conviction, or another result. ISP's public UCIA process is limited to qualifying reported conviction information, so it should not be read as a complete arrest archive.
| Arrest Record | Conviction Record |
|---|---|
| Created by arresting agency and jail | Created by the court and reported to ISP |
| Proves an arrest or booking event | Proves a plea or finding of guilt |
| Held in agency and custody systems | Held by the clerk and state repository |
| May end with release or no filing | May lead to sentence, appeal, sealing, or expungement where eligible |
Note: An arrest is not proof of guilt; filed charges may change, and cases can end without a conviction.
